Guide

How to estimate landscaping materials

All soil, gravel, and organic mulch products are estimated in cubic yards by calculating Length × Width × Depth. One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet (or a cube 3 feet on all sides).

1

Measure Area

Calculate square footage of all planting beds, pathways, and turf zones.

2

Select Depth

Topsoil for new beds typically requires 4–6 inches; mulch requires 3 inches; sand under pavers requires 1 inch.

3

Convert to Yards and Weight

Use the formula (Area × Depth) / 324 to get cubic yards. Multiply by material weight to determine truck payload.
