Guide

How to calculate mulch for flower beds

Mulch is measured by volume in cubic yards (1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = a 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft cube). For any garden area, multiply square footage by depth in feet, then divide by 27.

1

Measure Bed Dimensions

Measure the length and width of your flowerbed in feet to find total square feet.

2

Select Mulch Depth

New garden beds need 3 inches of mulch to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture. Established beds only need 1 to 2 inches to refresh color.

3

Calculate Cubic Yards

Multiply square feet by depth in inches, then divide by 324 (the magic conversion number: 12 inches/ft × 27 cu ft/yd).

Mathematics

Formulas used

Cubic Yards Formula

(Length × Width × Depth in Inches) / 324

Converts square feet and inches of depth directly into cubic yards.

Bag Count Formula

Cubic Yards × 27 / Bag Size (2 or 3 cu ft)

Determines how many retail store bags equal bulk volume.

Answers & FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?▼

There are 13.5 bags (2 cu ft each) or 9 bags (3 cu ft each) in one cubic yard. Always round up to 14 bags per yard.

How deep should mulch be in flower beds?▼

3 inches is the optimal depth for weed prevention and moisture retention. Going over 4 inches can suffocate plant roots.
