Guide

How to evaluate furniture spacing in a room

Floor occupancy is a useful first check, but a good layout also needs continuous paths, usable pull-out space, door swings, and access to storage.

1

Calculate the room area

Measure room length and width at floor level, excluding areas that are not usable for furniture.

2

Add furniture footprints

Multiply each item's maximum length and width, including projecting arms or bases, then add the areas.

3

Test actual circulation

Check the plan with tape or a scaled drawing because occupancy percentage cannot identify blocked routes by itself.

Mathematics

Formulas used

Furniture Occupancy

Combined Furniture Footprint ÷ Room Area × 100

Shows how much of the floor is physically occupied by furniture.

Open Floor Area

Room Area − Furniture Footprint

The remaining area includes circulation, door operation, and gaps between objects.

Answers & FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much space should be left between furniture?▼

Major walkways are most comfortable around 36 inches wide. Smaller gaps can work in compact rooms, but should not block doors or required access.

What percentage of a room should furniture occupy?▼

There is no universal code, but roughly 35–45% is a useful planning range for many living, bedroom, dining, and office layouts.

Does this replace a scaled floor plan?▼

No. Occupancy is an early warning metric. Use a scaled plan or tape layout to validate paths, door swings, and furniture relationships.
