Guide

How to calculate flooring and tile

Flooring is sold by the square foot inside packaged boxes containing 18 to 24 sq ft each. Because every row end requires a cut piece, a 10% waste buffer is standard for straight layouts, increasing to 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.

1

Measure Room Dimensions

Measure the longest length and width in feet. Include alcoves, entryways, and closets.

2

Add Cutting Waste

Multiply room area by 1.10 for standard plank lay, or by 1.15 for herringbone.

3

Divide by Box Square Footage

Look up your chosen product's square footage per box and divide your total. Always round up to the next full box.

Answers & FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I order for waste?▼

Order 10% extra for basic rectangular rooms laid in a straight plank pattern. Order 15% extra for rooms with many closets, curved walls, diagonal patterns, or herringbone.

Can I install LVP over existing tile?▼

Yes, provided the tile is firmly bonded and grout lines are filled with feather-finish patch so they don't telegraph through the vinyl plank.
